Changes as They Happen 1

[Editor’s Note: This Updates page is one of many new features that will be part of the new LasVegasAdvisor.com. Rather than waiting until the end of the month to see what’s new and different in the City of Perpetual Change, members can stay abreast of it in real time. With this post, we’re previewing the way the Las Vegas Advisor will be presented; stay tuned for more examples that everyone will be able to see until the switchover.]

One time way back in 1990 or so, we went to try a burger special at the little Nob Hill casino, located at center Strip. It was a great deal and we were excited that it could fill a spot in the Top Ten in the upcoming Advisor, due out in a week or so.

Well, between the time we sampled the burger and the newsletter deadline, not only did the deal disappear, but so did the whole casino! The joint closed that same week and reopened a few years later as Casino Royale.

Moral of the story: Things change fast around here.

Which is why we’re starting an Updates page. Rather than having to wait ’til the newsletter is published on the last day of the month, we’ll be posting as these things occur. You can check back here to see what might have happened to deals, meals, promotions, Top Tenners, even entire casinos since we last covered them.

This page also gives you a preview of the way we’ll be handling and presenting information after the switch to the new paid-subscription website — posting content regularly as we learn about, and/or experience things that we want to write about and review. And we’re out there, going and doing, every single day.

In April, the Vic’s play-$100-get-$20 bonus is running Fri.-Sun. only. On other days there’s 10X points, which isn’t worth much given the poor base schedules.

Updated April 4, 2024

G.O.A.T. Sports Bar Bonus Discontinued

After making several adjustments to its bonus offer in March, G.O.A.T. has now eliminated it completely. There’s still a weekly bonus based on play, but it doesn’t overcome the expected loss to earn it.

Twofer Breakfast at PKWY

Here’s one we missed, but it’s still available. PKWY Tavern at Decatur and W. Flamingo is offering BOGO breakfast Mon.-Fri. from 7 to 11 am. That works out to about $5 per with several choices. The deal is currently scheduled to run through the month. We haven’t checked the other PKWYs, but it appears to be available at all of them.

Vic’s Bonus Missing

Vic’s claims that it’s continuing its play-$100-get-$20 bonus in March along with the March Madness squares, but we’ve been there twice and the free-play isn’t registering. They claim it’s a programing glitch and that bonuses will be added on if you give them your name. But those kinds of promises are 50/50 at best.

MRO Updates

Updated February 16, 2024

There are two updates of note for Member Rewards Online offers. The redemption process for the Palms buffet twofer has been altered slightly in that you must now go to the club booth to have the voucher stamped before taking it to the buffet to redeem. The instructions in the Terms & Conditions on the voucher have been updated. Also, the Rio’s offer for 30%-off the base room rate and waiver of the resort fee is now live. Click here for details.

Vic’s Squares

Here’s more from Vic’s. Along with the daily $100/$20 deal, you get a Super Bowl square for every 4-of-a-kind. The equity in the square is $11. That raises the return on 6/5 Bonus Poker to 99.47%. Good play for beers in a cool setting and they’re liberal on food comps, though the action required isn’t defined. Parking is a problem; you usually have to park in the adjacent garage, but the charge is usually $1-$2 after validating at the bar.

Excellent deal, but if you to do it on consecutive days, it has to 24 hours apart. It had been running a similar deal for a sign-up bonus, we don’t if that’s still in force and if they can be done in tandem.

Dining Updates

Updated October 24, 2023

South Point Garden Buffet: All buffet prices have gone up by $1. The Friday seafood and prime rib dinner buffet is half an exception, staying the same at the regular price ($49.95), but club members pay $1 more than before at $45.95 . The seafood buffet’s opening time has also been moved up an hour to 3 p.m. and we hear the line is a lot shorter due to the change; it still closes at 9 p.m.

Updated October 23, 2023

Peter Luger steakhouse at Caesars Palace was supposed to debut a week from Wednesday, but to everyone’s surprise, it opened on Thursday, two weeks early. One of the oldest restaurant brands in the country, it dates back to the 1880s in New York, where it has two locations; the Vegas venue is the first beyond the Empire State. The prices are stratospheric: appetizers $15-$35; seafood cocktails $30-$40; seafood towers $96 (for two); chicken $45, lamb chops $75, Dover sole $90, and steaks starting at $72; sides and desserts $15. The restaurant is open daily to 10 p.m. and for lunch Wed.-Sun. at 11 a.m.; two lunch specials are a burger ($25) and steak sandwich ($30).

Updated August 29, 2023

Bacon Nation, the one-of-a-kind “coffee shop with a bacon hook” at the D downtown, has shortened its hours. When it opened last year, it was 24/7. Now it’s only 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Still 16 hours a day, but no longer a late-night play. We reviewed it in the January 2023 LVA and gave it a good one.

Updated August 28, 2023

The price of the shrimp cocktail at the Skyline casino on Boulder Hwy. has been raised by 99¢ to $3.49. This offer will be removed from the Top Ten.

Updated August 24, 2023

We wrote about Sgrizzi Pizza in the January 2023 Advisor. It was in the Ahern non-casino hotel (formerly the Lucky Dragon), a small pizza outlet next to Marc’s Trattoria, run by Marc Sgrizzi, owner-chef at several well-known eateries in town, including Marc’s World Cuisine and Parma. We liked the Sgrizzi pizza so much that we returned a few weeks ago and sure enough, both Sgrizzi and the Trattoria were gone. The room is now called Ottimo and against our better judgment, we tried their pie. We should’ve trusted our intuition; the pizza was instantly forgettable and that’s putting it mildly. Marc’s Ristorante & Bar will reportedly open by the end of the year at 9250 S. Rainbow Blvd. #130.

A few tickets also remain for Stewart’s dates this month: Nov. 10, 11, 15, 17, 18, and 22 (though we don’t recommend coming to Vegas for the last four shows during the height of the FU F1 misery).

RIP Dirk Arthur: Dirk Arthur, a mainstay Las Vegas headliner, illusionist, and big-cat performer of days gone by, died in Las Vegas last Friday at age 63 of an apparent heart attack. Arthur began his career in Las Vegas in the 1990s and continued to perform up until 2015 at Westgate in Dirk Arthur’s Wild Illusions. After that, animal-rights activism pretty much ended any chance he might have had to ply his big-animal trade on stage here. Still, he kept his big cats at his home, struggling to care for them and himself without much income. A fellow performer and animal-refuge proprietor told VitalVegas’ Scott Roeben, “I do not believe my friend Dirk died of a heart attack, but rather of a broken heart.” Scott knew Arthur personally and you can read his eulogy and see a few photos here.
